Excessive movement of the deep mentalis muscle of the chin is responsible for causing prominent chin puckering and the horizontal mental crease sometimes seen beneath the lower lip. Treatment with botox is relatively quick with one or two injections by an experienced doctor. The muscle is relaxed but not frozen, softening any dimpling or crease.
Deep grooves in the chin may require a dermal filler in addition to botox for optimal results. Individuals with hyperdynamic chins may also have downturned mouth lines which may benefit from treatment at the same time and would be discussed with the practitioner.
Indication: Chin dimpling or chin crease.
Muscle Targeted: The deep two-bellied mentalis muscle.
Muscle Action: The mentalis muscles function to raise the lower lip when pouting or drinking. As the muscle is attached to overlying skin, it also contributes to chin puckering.
Marionette Lines Treatment: One two injections of botulinum toxin into the chin depending on whether the chin is narrow or broad. This helps to smooth the chin and reduce any chin crease.
Adjacent muscle movement:Chin creases can be deep and may benefit from a combined treatment of botulinum toxin and dermal filler.
