Gynaecomastia (Male Breast Enlargement) Causes and Treatment

What is Gynaecomastia?

Gynaecomastia or male breast enlargement is the uncharacteristic development of breast tissue in males which occurs due to endocrine disorder. It benign but causes enlargement of the breast tissue.

New-born baby boys and adolescents are prone to male-breast development however, advanced-aged men can also face this problem as it is caused due to a number of reasons which can be either physiological or pathological.

Causes of Gynaecomastia (Male Breast Development)

Gynaecomastia or male breast enlargement due to physiological reasons occurs to due growing age in young boys while pathological causes are more complicated involving hormonal imbalance when androgens decrease compared to oestrogens.

Oestrogen induces breast tissue growth where androgen prevents it. This balance should remain maintained which can be altered due to reduced testosterone production or greater oestrogen production. Either way, the breast tissue continues to develop. The causes of that hormonal imbalance can be:

  • Excessive alcohol intake
  • Drugs, especially anabolic steroids
  • Congenital absence of testes
  • Androgen resistance
  • Klinefelter’s syndrome
  • Certain diseases, such as liver failure, renal disease and cancer
  • By birth abnormality
  • Obesity
  • Breast skin sagging due to instant weight loss

Gynaecomastia (Male Breast Enlargement) Treatment

Consult a doctor for gynaecomastia treatment who may recommend two different types of treatment options available.

  • Surgical Male Breast Reduction: This procedure is used to purge unwanted breast tissue. It uses methods such as subcutaneous mastectomy, liposuction-assisted mastectomy, laser-assisted liposuction, and laser-lipolysis without liposuction. The procedure requires general anaesthetic takes almost one and half hours to complete. The surgeon makes incisions at the areola area around the nipple and removes excess fat tissue using liposuction. The procedure requires nearly a weeks’ recovery time. The results are usually permanent but weight gain may cause regrowth of breast tissue.
  • Medication: In order to level hormonal imbalance.
