Mole/Skin Tag Removal

What Are Moles?

Moles are small, dark spots on the skin formed by clusters of pigmented cells called melanocytes. They can be flat or raised and vary in colour from brown to black. Moles can appear anywhere on the body and typically develop during childhood or adolescence.

They may change over time but should be monitored for any unusual changes in size, shape, or colour, as this can indicate potential skin issues.

Formation: Moles form when melanocytes grow in clusters instead of being evenly spread out in the skin. Factors influencing mole formation include genetics, sun exposure, and hormonal changes.

What Are Skin Tags?

Skin Tags: Skin tags are small, soft, benign growths that hang off the skin, often appearing on areas where skin rubs against skin or clothing, such as the neck, armpits, or groin. They are usually flesh-coloured or slightly darker and can vary in size.

Formation: Skin tags form when skin cells multiply rapidly in response to friction or irritation. They are more common in people who are overweight, pregnant or have certain health conditions like diabetes.

Moles / Skin Tag Removal Options

Both moles and skin tags are usually harmless, but it’s essential to consult a healthcare professional if you notice any changes in their appearance. If you’re considering removal, here are your options:

Moles

  1. Excision: Your doctor may cut out the mole entirely. Some moles can be shaved off at the skin level, while others may require a deeper cut to remove all underlying cells, which may involve stitches.
  2. Cryotherapy: Liquid nitrogen is applied to freeze the mole. This can cause a small blister that will heal on its own.
  3. Electrosurgery: An electric current heats a wire to burn away the mole’s upper layers. Multiple sessions may be needed for complete removal.

Skin Tags

  1. Cryotherapy: Similar to moles, skin tags can be frozen with liquid nitrogen to cause them to fall off.
  2. Surgical Excision: A doctor can snip off the skin tag with sterile scissors.
  3. Electrosurgery: An electric current can also be used to remove skin tags by burning them off.
  4. Ligation: A small string is tied around the base of the skin tag to cut off blood supply, leading to its eventual detachment.

Before any procedure, your doctor will numb the area with an anaesthetic. If bleeding occurs, they may apply a medication to help stop it, followed by a bandage. These treatments usually leave minimal scarring.
