Lips are the focal point of the lower face with volume, smoothness and well-defined borders being the epitome of youth and beauty. It is with dismay that we notice how our lips change with age as they lose their contour and become thin and wrinkled. The lines that radiate from the borders deter women from their usual bright lipsticks due to lipstick bleeding. Although often termed 'smoker's lines' they can also be attributed to habitual pursing of the lips, chronological age and photodamage.
There are a variety of treatments adept at smoothing lip lines. Botox anti-wrinkle injections are best suited to dynamic wrinkles, those that appear whilst pursing lips. For established (static) perioral lines, dermal fillers and resurfacing with chemical peels and lasers are more effective.
Indication: Lip lines around the mouth, also known as ‘smoker’s lines’ or ‘lipstick lines’.
Muscle Targeted: The orbicularis oris muscle that encircles the mouth.
Muscle Action: Enables ‘puckering’ by drawing the lips medially and inverting the lip border.
smoker lip Lines Treatment: Small, equal, doses of botulinum toxin are injected superficially to treat upper and lower lip lines. The central Cupid’s Bow is usually avoided as this can lead to flattening.
Additional Treatments: Deeper lip lines may respond better to combination treatments with botulinum toxin, dermal filler and/or laser resurfacing.
