Learning The Proper Application Of Sunscreen
If you are one of those people who has finally been persuaded to use sunscreen, hold on, you might not know the right way to use it!
Using sunscreen is not like moisturising lotion or cream, as it involves learning the proper amount to use, the correct method and the right timing!
It is not as simple as you think, but not that difficult either. Learning about the best way to apply it will benefit you for the rest of your life, so we have written this article to educate you about it.
When Should I Apply A Sunscreen?
Always! You need sunscreen 365 days a year, whether it is sunny or cloudy. This is because harmful sunrays can penetrate through the clouds and UVA rays can even pass through glass windows. So, if your office seat is close to a window or you spend a lot of your time near one at home, you need to apply sunblock even indoors.
What Is The Right Time To Apply Sunscreen?
Many people are confused about when is the right time to apply sunscreen. Should it be applied just as you are leaving home or a little before that?
People make the mistake of applying sunscreen just before leaving home. This is wrong because sunscreen takes some time to start working. So, to achieve proper coverage, it is wise to apply it at least 10 to 20 minutes before your skin is exposed to the sun.
How Many Times Does Sunscreen Need to be Applied a Day?
Another important point to remember is that you need to keep reapplying sunscreen. You cannot expect to just apply it in the morning and at noon when you step out for lunch. Reapplication is needed.
Many all-day sunscreens have recently emerged on the market that claims to work all day long without any need for reapplication. However, studies have found this is too good to be true because their SPF drops from 30 to 8 in just 6 hours –that is a 74% decrease in sun protection.
There is a need to keep reapplying sunscreen every two hours to experience adequate sun protection.
On What Layer Should Your Sunscreen Be Applied?
Should you apply sunscreen below your makeup or over your makeup? The answer depends on what kind of sunscreen you are using. To find out about different types of sunscreens, follow this link.
There are various forms of sunscreens, like creams, lotions, gels, powders and even sprays, and their use varies.
When using a cream, lotion, or gel sunscreen, follow these instructions:
- Sunscreen should be applied after your moisturiser. So if you are only going to apply a sunscreen without any makeup, use your moisturiser and then apply the sunscreen.
- If you are going to wear makeup, follow the same guidelines. Apply the moisturiser, followed by your sunscreen, and then start layering your makeup, like primer or foundation etc.
When applying sunscreen over a moisturiser, it is good to wait for around 5 minutes to allow the moisturiser to settle down, as this will help you to apply the sunscreen more evenly.
When using a powder or spray product, apply them at the end after you have applied all the layers of your makeup.
How much Sunscreen should be applied?
Using the right amount of sunscreen is important. If you will apply it too scantily, it won’t do the job. So be liberal when using it.
One teaspoon is enough for your face while your body requires a few tablespoons. The amount required also varies according to the SPF. You need to apply more of a lower SPF sunscreen if you want it to provide the same level of protection as a sunscreen with a higher SPF.
How Do You Apply Sunscreen?
Once again, it depends on your type of sunscreen. Just as there are two types of sunscreens (physical and chemical), there a few differences in their application as well. Physical sunscreen is further divided into two types –nano mineral sunscreen and non-nano mineral sunscreen.
Here are instructions on how to apply sunscreen, according to the type of sunscreen:
As there are two types of physical sunscreens, the application process differs.
Non-nano mineral sunscreens are applied in layers. Don’t rub them into your skin like a moisturiser. Instead, stroke your skin with a finger until a layer is formed on it. It is recommended that you use your middle finger for better control, as this will create a better application that is even and smooth. Keep applying the product until the face is fully covered. It will create a veil-like effect. Make sure you use enough to get the maximum benefit. Nano mineral sunscreen can be applied like a moisturiser, as it is easily absorbed by the skin without leaving a white tint. Again, it’s important to apply enough to get full protection. Chemical Sunscreen.
Chemical sunscreens can be absorbed into the skin like lotions. However, try not to make them disappear completely. It is suggested you use an ample amount if you want to stop sun damage. Try using fewer fingers when you apply it, as your fingers can absorb the product too.
Which Areas Should Sunscreen Be Applied To?
To be precise, ALL THE EXPOSED AREAS! Don’t forget the neck, arms, hands, and feet, along with your face. Be careful if you apply perfume on décolleté, as perfumes can lead to photosensitivity, so sunscreen is a must in such cases.
Also, apply sunscreen more liberally on the areas that are more prone to photo damage, including the nasolabial folds, the area between your brows, and the thin skin below your eyes. These areas are the first to develop wrinkles.
