Cheek, Chin & Jawline
Dermal Filler Treatment

Our ageing processes begin as we reach the age of mid-20s due to both internal mechanisms such as loss of ‘filler’ components, hyaluronic acid and collagen, and lifestyle factors causing ageing signs, wrinkles to appear, along with a loss of volume and radiance. The facial skin hence appears older and saggy with every passing year while altering facial shape and structure. The volume loss in the layers below the skin (epidermis and dermis) results in sunken facial appearance and alteration of our facial proportions. Typical areas of such volume loss are the cheeks, outer face, jawline and chin.

The proportions of volume in youth make it appear attractive. The features in the ‘triangle of beauty’ including:

jawline before and after

  • High, prominent cheekbones
  • Well-defined jawline (click here for treatment)
  • Full and forward-pointing chin

These features together form a harmonised facial structure that is wide from the top, narrowing down to the chin with a calm and positive outlook. We assume, the skin is smooth, radiant and glowing and why wouldn’t it be if you are a client of COSMEDOCS!

These are the signs of ageing that invert the triangle with the lower face becoming wider than the upper. As volume diminishes in the cheek fat pads, the facial outlook also does.

Causes of facial volume loss

Hormonal Changes

Levels of hormones such as oestrogen decrease with age, causing a decline in volume and definition to facial outline.

Habits such as smoking and spending a long time under the sun cause a decrease in collagen and elastin while accelerating the ageing process. The formation of free radicals weakens cellular structures which help in maintaining skin’s smoothness and definition resulting in loss of volume, density and radiance and wrinkles become prominent.

Over time the skin loses hyaluronic acid from the epidermis and collagen from deeper layers of skin (1% yearly decrease). The skin begins to forms wrinkles, and fat pads in the cheek and face become sunken with hollow cheeks.

Dermal Fillers as volume replacement agents

With recent advancements in dermal filler technology, we have access to high-grade products that restore fat pad volume effectively and safely using blunt tubes called cannulas. We only use hyaluronic acid-based fillers that are temporary but much longer-lasting than fillers used in lipslines & wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally producing hydrating agent with anti-oxidant properties, making it an ideal substance. Hyaluronic acid occurs in abundance in the skin, fat and bones naturally.

Two reasons for dermal fillers in the face

Losing volume in the cheeks resulting in the sunken appearance with the formation of nasolabial folds (nose-mouth) while outer face (in front and below the ear area) volume loss occurs results in the creation of jowls. Both areas are fully corrected using high-grade dermal fillers that last >15 months. As well, the chin was improved to compensate for a short jawline improving facial profile.
