Leg Vein Sclerotherapy Treatments
Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical thread vein removal procedure that is used to treat unsightly varicose, thread veins and haemorrhoids. The medical term “sclerosis” refers to “a hardening of body parts”, which may include tissues, organs or vessels due to inflammation and fibrosis.
Thread & Varicose Veins
Thread veins are also termed as dilated veins or spider bursts. These veins become more prominent in the face and leg area and occur due to the hormonal effect of menarche, or during pregnancy or menopause. Other causes may include smoking, alcohol consumption, heavy muscular activity and even genetics.
Varicose veins are those which become enlarged and distorted and usually appear on legs. These are more common in women. Its causes may include are linked with, heredity, pregnancy, obesity, menopause, ageing, prolonged standing, leg injury and abdominal straining.
Thread Vein Removal Treatment
Sclerotherapy is among the most common remedies for vein issues. The thread vein removal procedures uses local anaesthetic and a sclerosing solution which is injected at multiple veins sites through fine needles, causing irritation in the inner lining of the vein known as endothelium that are aimed to gradually yet effectively make thread/varicose veins fade over few months.
Veins are compressed using cotton pads. After that, a compression stocking is applied in order to press the treated veins, so that they do not allow blood to pass through them.
During the thread vein removal procedure, one leg is treated per session, while each leg multiple may requires multiple sessions.
Results And Recovery Time Duration
The treated veins should fade gradually in around 6 – 12 weeks. Sclerotherapy does not require any specific recovery time.
Complications
Contact the clinic if you feel the inflammation has become more after treatment. Bruising is common and may last for 1-2 weeks and while the areas of pigmentation along the treated vein may persist for 6 – 12 weeks, while it takes longer with large varicose veins to recover.
Other complications include:
- Blood clots in other leg veins
- Headaches
- Lower back pain
- Allergic Reaction
- Hyperpigmentation
- Skin Necrosis
- Thrombophlebitis
- Venous Thromboembolism
- Visual Disturbances
